The Approach of his Pet Saurian

Text modified for legibility
Date: 1834?

Format: A sketch, presumably in a letter?

Description: Drawn for geologist Gideon Mantell. I can't find much information about this sketch, but I presume it must have been sent in a letter or something like that. The History of Geology blog [historyofgeology.fieldofscience.com] says that it was drawn to commemorate Mantell's 1834 discovery of an iguanodon at Maidstone. (Iguanodons were initially was thought to have stood on all fours, hence saurian's stance in the sketch. The spike on the thumb was originally thought to be on the nose.) Strange Science [strangescience.net] says that it was drawn to commemorate Mantell's earning of an Doctorate in Laws. Mantell is said to be wearing laurels. Gideon Mantell is credited with the discovery of the first iguanadon.

Mantell and and De la Beche would have a falling out, with Mantell accusing De la Beche of plagiarism.
