Format: Print
Description: Apparently a satire of over-effusive toasts at scientific societies. The president has a resemblance to De la Beche himself, but he was not yet president of the Geological or Paleontographical Societies in 1837. The owl-of-wisdom carved into the chair behind the speaker contrasts his frivolous remarks.
If the cartoon makes a specific reference, it is beyond me. I can find basically no information about this print online. It mostly exists on the websites of stock photo aggregators. I do not even know if this is the original color of the print or if (as it appears) it has been digitally colorized (though it is on a museum archive website).
