Travels in Europe

Date: 1820, 1829

Format: Diary sketches

Description: The first two images are scenes of De la Beche's travel through Europe in 1820. He liked the charabanc because it gave the best view of the countryside, and it was easier to hop on and off to look at things. De la Beche drew other self-portraits of travelling in his diary, but these were selected from those reproduced by McCartney (1977) for their cartoon-like value.

The final image is from a 1829 European trip. De la Beche is with his servant, Henri, and is galloping forward, pointing the way with his rock hammer.
